I tried a cake covered in fondant for the first time and found it surprisingly good. Like so good that I could go for some right now.

When I was in Egypt I ate at least three oranges a day. The oranges were so sweet and juicy and exceedingly easy to peel. I wish I liked oranges at home as much as I liked oranges there.

Today I taught my first real lesson in front of 26 rowdy kids with my advisor watching. Had an evaluation afterwards. He told me I did well, but the whole thing was really really intense. (My mentor teacher says she still feels that way during observations, even after 5+ years.) Been listening to Sloop John B. by the Beach Boys on repeat ever since I got home, it is a calming song.

Re: The Last Entry

So, the cookbook in question was Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, and the recipe was the basic pastry crust. The recipe says to use 1 1/4 cups margarine (yeah, I proabaly should have seen troube coming!) but you should really only use 1/4 cup. Oops!

I was making the White Bean, Mushroom, and Leek Pie, and despite the crust being a tad greasy, the pie turned out well. The filling tastes awesome.

So far, I've made that pie and the Cocoa Raspberry Muffins from the book, and they were both excellent; even my family (who generally abhor vegan food) liked them, especially the muffins.

By the way, I picked up Vegan Brunch (along with the Doris Anthology!) at the Philly Zine Fest last week, from Wooden Shoe Books. The zine fest was a blast this year!

I got my field experience placement today! I'm so excited! It's a third grade classroom. The only thing I am nervous about is that we have to actually teach one lesson with the head of the ed department watching. I know I write awesome lessons and I can give awesome demo lessons to my classmates, but actually being in the classroom and teaching... I'm very nervous but excited about it!

I went under my bed searching for a case to a now-overdue DVD from the library and my copy of What It Is by Lynda Barry. Sadly I did not find the book, but in addition to the DVD case (phew!) I found the following items:

-A box set of The Godfather Trilogy
-A creepy magazine with a close-up of Arnold Schwarzenegger on the cover
-Two perfectly intact spiral notebooks (one green, one blue)
-An ancient fucking sippy cup, no way am I gonna touch it
-A mix CD a boy made for me in high school
-Lots of unpopped popcorn kernals

I remeber when I got the bed... maybe it was a year ago? A year and a half? I know Zach was maybe two because he was climbing on on all the beds in the store... anyhow, when I got the bed, I remember I was super embarrassed becase when they hauled out my old bed there were a TON of (unused!) condoms under it. Like, two dozen or more, and I just scopped them all up real quick before they came back in.
